I REFER to Tuesday's letter 'Distractions during TV soccer match' by Mr Keith Tyrone Neubronner and thank him for commending StarHub for airing eight Barclays Premier League matches simultaneously last weekend.
As for his feedback on pop-up screens (Goal Flashes) and ticker score alerts that are carried during StarHub's 'live' telecast of Barclays Premier League matches, we would like to explain that StarHub first included ticker score alerts on Football Channel in October last year, following suggestions from viewers who wished to be updated on the scores of other ongoing matches, without having to switch channels.
We incorporated Goal Flashes as a value-added feature earlier this year to enable viewers to watch the goal highlights of other games that are taking place simultaneously. Goal Flashes are aired with discretion, and we ensure that the screens do not pop up in the midst of an exciting moment during the main game.
While we have received compliments from viewers who appreciate these features, we understand that there may be some viewers like Mr Neubronner who find them a distraction.
As our enhanced TV (eTV) service offers a 'score alert' option to provide scores and updates, we will consider how to best use the alternatives to provide score updates and highlights that provide the best access and simultaneously minimise potential distractions for viewers.
The eTV service is available to all StarHub Digital Cable customers with a HubStation, High Definition or digital set-top box.
We would like to hear from our customers on their preferences with regard to the ticker score alerts and Goal Flashes, and encourage viewers to write in to feedback@footballchannel.com.sg with their views.
We thank Mr Neubronner for his feedback to improve the viewer experience of Football Channel.
