Smoking ban flouted in public places
IT HAS been two years since the smoking ban was implemented, but it seems smokers continue to light up in public places, much to the annoyance of non-smokers. On many occasions, I have spotted smokers lighting up at bus stops and in hawker centres.

Just last Monday, I was having dinner at a hawker centre in Keong Saik Road. Half way through, I was overwhelmed by a cloud of cigarette smoke from the next table. To my horror, there were four men smoking there and the irony was, there was a huge 'no smoking' sign beside the table.

Although there were tables for smokers inside the designated yellow box, these men showed utter disrespect for other diners.

At first, I thought it was only this group of smokers who were flouting the law. However, when I glanced around, I realised there were more smokers at the other tables. Even one of the hawkers was smoking in front of his stall. All were clearly unafraid they would be fined for flouting the rules.

I would like to ask the National Environment Agency if it conducts regular checks to ensure the smoking ban is upheld?
