Childcare centre closure ill timed
I REFER to recent reports of the closure of two childcare centres in Catholic churches which, at this time of year, have left parents in the lurch.

The latest victim is my nephew's childcare centre at PAP Sparkletots Child Care Centre in Tampines Street 33. The reason given was falling birth rate and enrolment rate.

What perturbed me was why this was done now and not at year end. I am sure management had this in mind since last year and should have told parents before the year started. Imagine the impact on parents even if an alternative school was given - what about the child adapting to a new environment and so on? This is a business decision, but often we forget the impact on consumers.

I am sure there other closures which will lead to more teachers unemployed. Perhaps there will even come a time when primary schools are also affected.

Can the authorities comment on how such exercises can be better managed? On the one hand, we try to promote the importance of family; on the other, such exercises have a negative impact on the family.
