I REFER to Mr N. Rajendran's letter last Tuesday, 'Good for these expat Indians'. I thank him for shedding light on what is undoubtedly a complicated subject: the financial situation of Indian Singaporeans relative to that of the population at large.
My intention in writing my letter, to which Mr Rajendran responded, was not to deter expatriate Indians from doing charitable work.
They are welcome to do so, of course. What I am concerned about is the mindset among some - not all - of these Indians who regard themselves as saviours of the local community. This superiority complex is undesirable.
Also, foreigners, whether Indians or others, should be sensitive to the fact that Singapore is a multiracial, multicultural and multireligious society.
Charitable work by a foreign community should transcend racial borders wherever possible and not help just one targeted race.
