I REFER to Thursday's report, 'More cabbies being robbed' and wish to add that, although not many cabbies have been robbed, many have had passengers flee without paying. Culprits target cabbies because of their vulnerability, especially as a good number of taxi drivers are more than 50 years old. Most cabbies will neither defend their cash when they are robbed nor run after non-paying passengers as it is not worth the trouble.
Then, what about rude or stressed passengers who seek an opportunity to vent their anger or frustration on taxi drivers? I appreciate the recent campaign that spoke against those who bully public bus captains. I feel more needs to be done for cabbies.
The authorities should consider ways to protect the safety and earnings of taxi drivers. Measures like erecting a transparent shield between the driver and back-seat passengers, revamping the mode of payment (using ez-link card or CashCard) are possible ways.
