AWARE readily and happily agrees with Dr John Hui Keem Peng's letter on Monday, 'It's not 'safe sex' with the use of condoms', that young people should be given correct information 'so they can make the right decision for themselves'. We share Dr Hui's concerns about 'safe sex', which is a basis of Aware's holistic approach to sex education.
First, the objective of all Aware programmes, including our Comprehensive Sexuality Education, is to empower young people, and especially women, to lead fulfilling lives as equal partners in their private and public lives.
That objective informs our holistic approach to our Comprehensive Sexuality Education.
The programme was developed because the traditional (biological) approach to sex education has not succeeded in reducing the incidence of teen sex, STDs, teen pregnancies and sexual abuse of girls and women.
Aware's programme focuses on more than just 'safe sex'. Rather it empowers young men and women to build positive relationships based on mutual respect, equality and healthy choices.
