MR TAN Shao Yi ('Tune out TV Mobile, please', March 29) stated that 'commuters can tune in to the radio for personal listening. Mobile phones and PDAs have also increased accessibility to radio channels without the need to carry a portable radio'.
Surely, he is aware that not all phones, PDAs or MP3 players have FM radio built in.
Without TV Mobile, commuters still won't enjoy 'a quiet read or time to themselves on bus trips'. There is just too much ambient noise, with the din of the bus engine, other traffic, and the chatter of uncles and aunties.
May I suggest unhappy commuters buy a pair of noise-cancelling or noise-reducing earplugs or earphones that will cut 90 per cent of noise.
However, I hope bus companies can better insulate the bus interior from ambient noise.
Personally, I enjoy the news broadcast on TV Mobile - when I can hear it through the ding-dong of daily bus commuting. Otherwise, I tune into my digital player to listen to an audio book, a seminar recording, music or BBC radio with a pair of noise-reducing earphones. Ordinary earphones won't do.
On a side note, I had long assumed that TV Mobile's purpose is to allow the Government to reach the travelling public in an emergency, and wonder why SMRT Buses has not implemented it as well.
