I REFER to last Friday's article, 'Singapore drops to 5th place in tech-savviness ranking'. It mentioned that Singapore scored badly in the areas of 'accessibility of digital content' and 'freedom of the press'.
The article gave the impression that these two areas contributed to Singapore's fall in the Network Readiness Index. But these areas actually fall under the market sub-component of the index and Singapore is ranked No. 1 overall in this sub-component, ahead of Denmark and the United States.
Singapore's nemesis was in the infrastructure sub-component, which covers areas such as availability of scientists and engineers, and tertiary enrolment. In the infrastructure component, Singapore trailed behind in 26th place, compared to its peers the US, Sweden and Denmark, which ranked second, third and fourth respectively.
To move up in the tech ranking, Singapore should focus on building up its infrastructure environment.
