WE REFER to Mr Erik Peyrer's letter yesterday, 'That Sunday F1 vroom was dangerous'. The event organisers would like to assure everyone that public safety was our utmost priority. We ensured that every precaution was taken to adhere to the strictest safety guidelines set by the local authorities and Team McLaren Mercedes, the F1 technical team behind the event.
The water barricades and the spectator fence lines were positioned in accordance with the safety requirements set by McLaren and the local authorities. In addition, the water barricades were utilised for specific safety reasons and were designed to stop the car but would not act like a concrete wall that would harm the driver. Every water barrier was inspected by the local police before the event was allowed to proceed.
At the same time, a safety car was deployed to inspect the stretch of road for foreign matter each time prior to the F1 car coming out for a demonstration. We worked closely with McLaren, Traffic Police of Singapore, the Central Police and the Land Transport Authority to determine the safety needs for the crowd.
Similar demonstrations have been carried out by McLaren in many countries and always adhere to the strictest safety measurements to ensure the demonstration is enjoyed in a safe and controlled environment. Sunday's promotional event was conducted very differently from a conventional Formula One race in terms of limitations, control of speed and activities.
Thorough safety and medical support were provided. We share Mr Peyrer's concerns for public safety, which is at the core of the campaign we launched to communicate the 'Never Drink and Drive'' message.
We would like to assure him and the public that all necessary steps were taken to ensure public safety while delivering an exciting event for motor-racing fans to enjoy.
