IT IS heartening to read Saturday's report, 'New Cabinet must engage Singaporeans, says SM Goh'.
In a seemingly youth-orientated society, Mr Goh's statement that older people are important and must not be neglected is timely, especially now that there are more than 300,000 Singaporeans aged 65 years and above.
As the figure will soar to 900,000 by the year 2030, it is imperative that Singapore's political leaders work the ground harder to have a first-hand understanding of the situation.
There is a need for more social service agencies to cope with increasing demand for elderly care and related services. Opportunities should be provided for the elderly to be useful, to impart their skills and experience through continual contact with the corporate world.
Modern seniors want to remain relevant and viable, and, above all, to remain valuable members of their families and the community at large.
Increased life expectancy necessitates greater concerted effort to engage older people to be physically and mentally active.
