Act against hiring of illegal nannies
DESPITE the law requiring Malaysian confinement nannies working in Singapore to have a temporary work permit, there are still many Malaysian confinement nannies working here on social visit passes.

Some employers feign ignorance while others ignore the law. The latter include teachers, lawyers, doctors and other professionals. They cite reasons such as that no one has been caught or that everyone else is doing it, so why shouldn't they?

Some also suggest why they should be so silly as to apply for a work permit and having to pay a government levy. As no action appears to have been taken and no one has been penalised, many employers will continue to turn to these illegal sources without fear.

Employers who are getting these illegals should think twice. Besides flouting the law, they are taking a big risk in having an illegal worker stay with them and take care of their baby.

Perhaps, there should be notices in hospitals and clinics reminding employers to employ Malaysian confinement nannies with proper work permits and stressing the seriousness of running afoul of the law.
