WE REFER to the letter from Mr Bryan Chung Hoe Weng, 'Is ITE still second class and can polys cope?' (March 11). We have contacted Mr Chung and explained the polytechnic admissions system to him.
The five polytechnics welcome ITE graduates to join us, and run a dedicated admission exercise called the Joint Polytechnic Admissions Exercise (JPAE) to consider candidates with Nitec and Higher Nitec qualifications. It mirrors the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) conducted by the Education Ministry for O-level school leavers.
There are no 'first' and 'second' class distinctions between these two groups of applicants and we have assured Mr Chung that admission to all Temasek Polytechnic courses is based on merit.
Mr Chung's first choice was for one of our most popular courses, the Diploma in Aviation Management & Services, which has a total of 95 places. Since the course was first launched last year, we have received an overwhelming response. We have increased our intake by 25 per cent in this year's admission exercise. However, competition for places remains very keen.
Although Mr Chung was not successful in his application for Aviation Management & Services, he has since been offered a place for the course working towards a Diploma in Cyber & Digital Security, which he listed as his second choice in his application. Mr Chung has now enrolled into the course and we wish him success in his studies at Temasek Polytechnic.
