THURSDAY'S response by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), 'Causeway jam: ICA doing its best to ease woes', to an earlier letter which asked when things would return to normal at both checkpoints, misses the point.
Singaporeans travelling to Malaysia do not want to know whether there will be additional mobile toilets set up, or whether all available manpower resources will be deployed at both checkpoints. What the public wishes to know is when normal customs and immigration procedures will resume because the extra measures and delays caused greatly inconvenience us.
The ICA and the Ministry of Home Affairs should tell the public how much longer they intend to pursue this intense hunt for escaped detainee Mas Selamat. Tell us also how much longer they will continue to hold heightened security checks.
The longer Mas Selamat remains uncaught, the more we must face up to the possibility that he has already left the country, although I really hope I am wrong.
To this end, the ministry and ICA should release a joint statement to inform all Singaporeans when normal checking procedures will be resumed at both checkpoints.
My family has had to cancel hotel bookings in Kuala Lumpur for now until normal clearance procedures resume because family time on the weekend is precious and we don't want to spend two to three hours stuck in a jam.
