THE MRT has started advising commuters to keep left on escalators, and it is working well. I suggest it be taken further. Place stickers and paint signs on floors and steps, wherever pedestrians need someone to give way.
For example, it is a struggle to climb up overhead bridges, especially if other people are coming down. If you are elderly and have bags in your hands, balancing and 'switching lanes' can be a struggle. I suggest footprints be painted on the steps with the words 'keep left'.
On jogging tracks, one often has to switch lanes, and it is annoying when a group of people blocks the entire path. To add to this, dogs make one go left-right-left. Paint large footprints with the words 'keep left'.
Pedestrian pavements like those in Orchard Road and other shopping areas should also have such signs. Encourage shopping centres to display similar stickers to those on the MRT, so the message can be passed on.
Put a humorous article in the newspaper so people will read it and laugh - but still get the message.
If it can work on the MRT, it will work throughout Singapore.
