WE REFER to Mr Cyril Pereira's letter on Monday, 'NKF means well, but consider practicalities'.
We did a careful study before implementing our policy of not allowing outside food to be consumed in the dialysis treatment area.
From a medical standpoint, we aim to ensure a clean and hygienic environment, which is consistent with our infection control guidelines. Before or after dialysis, patients are free to consume their outside food at the eating areas provided outside the treatment area in all dialysis centres. We have also extended the centres' operating hours to allow patients sufficient time to eat before dialysis.
A variety of snacks and beverages are provided to patients free of charge during their dialysis session, catering to patients' special needs such as diabetic and elderly patients. Additional provisions will be in place to meet the specific needs of Muslim patients during the fasting month. We have also asked patients to suggest other snacks and beverages for us to consider.
All patients were told and notices put up one month before the policy took effect.
It is expected that some patients need more time to adjust their meal times and our nurses are helping them do so. Rest assured, we have taken necessary steps to ensure patients' health is not compromised when we implemented this policy.
Other hospitals and private dialysis centres locally or abroad have their own guidelines and regulations which may be different and the National Kidney Foundation is not in a position to explain their policies.
All patients have been issued personalised slippers. In addition to existing dust mats at all entrances, additional dust mats have been added to minimise exposure to external influences.
