That Monday night joke on Channel U

'Such insensitivity has no place, and should not be tolerated.'
SELVAKUMAR PRAKASAM, referring to a programme on MediaCorp's Channel U on Monday night in which a local Chinese artist burlesqued Malay and Indian mannerisms. He says a joke, be it private or public, should elicit laughter from everyone, including those about whom it is cracked. But he feels that 'if it has the dire propensity to wound someone's feelings', especially if it's about sensitive matters like race and religion, the joke becomes offensive. It has no place in racially tolerant Singapore, he says.
