I WATCHED MediaCorp Channel 8's Twilight Years on March 2 and was struck by the irony in the situation of an elderly woman with a mobility problem who was featured. According to the programme, her only exercise is to walk along the common corridor outside her Housing Board flat.
At first, I was delighted to note that a railing had been installed along the corridor. Then I saw a bicycle chained to the railing. The corridor was also lined with items, all of which obstructed ease of movement and defeated the purpose of installing the railing to help the elderly walk.
Such sights - including the storage of hazardous items along common corridors, and beside staircases and lift landings - are not uncommon. So also bicycles chained to pipes.
Town councils should take firmer action or plan better ways to tackle the problem. As the TV programme suggests, we seem to have given in to such inconsiderate and dangerous practices and regard them as part of the HDB landscape.
