THERE is some disquiet about Thursday's fatal shooting of the man who allegedly knifed a drinking buddy to death half an hour earlier.
Questions were raised as to why the police didn't shoot the suspect in his legs instead. Some have even opined that the fatal shooting was unwarranted. But the public must be made aware of the imminent danger the two police officers faced.
It would have taken less than a second for the suspect, armed with a knife allegedly used earlier in a murder, to inflict perhaps fatal injuries on these officers.
Although the police have a duty to protect life and maintain law and order, their lives must be protected too.
I couldn't agree more with Superintendent Lau Peet Meng, commander of Central Police Division, that his colleague acted justifiably.
The officer should be commended for his quick action. Who knows, the suspect might have seized a hostage in order to get away.
