Only fit drivers are given licence
I THANK Mr Yap Swee Hoo for his suggestion last Wednesday, 'Bar those with mental records from driving'. An individual applying for the provisional driving licence is required to declare he does not suffer from any disability or medical condition that would impair his driving and make him a source of public danger. Such disabilities or medical conditions include epilepsy, mental disorder, sudden attacks of giddiness, and visual defects like total colour blindness. An applicant who declares he is suffering from such conditions, or is assessed by our officers as such, will be rejected.
Anyone caught falsely declaring his fitness to drive faces a $5,000 fine or 12 months' imprisonment or both. Police will also take appropriate action under the Road Traffic Act to revoke a person's licence if we receive information that the licence holder is medically unfit to drive. Drivers suffering from such conditions should act responsibly and seek medical advice to certify their fitness to continue driving.
