Learning problem not picked up till Primary 5
AS A new volunteer working with pupils who are not doing well in school, I detected a serious learning problem in a Primary 5 child.

She seemed emotionally well balanced, with a keen mind and eager to learn, so an unstable home environment was not the cause.

In October last year, the school principal assured me the school would follow up on the child's problem. But help came only four months later.

My questions are these:

  • How did the pupil get this far in the education system without the problem being picked up by teachers?

  • How did she move up year after year without anyone realising she needed help?

  • How could this child, who is currently in Primary 6, have coped with regular after-school remedial classes if she had difficulty identifying even basic three-letter words?

Why did it take the authorities four months to act and wasn't this a wasted period for the child? In this instance, I wish the wheels of bureaucracy had moved a little faster.
