We thank Mr Raymond Tham Kon Weng for his letter 'Are we creating sportsmen or spectators?' (ST, Jan 24).
Singapore has an inclusive sports development strategy that caters to casual, elite and disabled sportsmen. It promotes all aspects of participation which helps to make Singapore a great place in which to live, work and play. This strategy is jointly promoted with the 60 national sports associations (NSAs) here.
The Sports Hub is a key part of this strategy and promises to be a successful and sustainable fully integrated sports, entertainment and lifestyle hub for everyone, every day. Supporters and amateur athletes will mix with elite and professional athletes and coaches to create a circle of growing attendances, growing participation and success for Singapore's athletes.
The Sports Hub will provide an event-packed calendar for everyone throughout the year. While international events will be hosted in the new Sports Hub, there will be as many local and community events. The Sports Hub is designed to allow events to be hosted in one venue while other facilities can remain open to the public.
The entire Sports Hub will be purpose-built and designed to provide access for athletes, the public and people with disabilities. For instance, electric-powered trains will help visitors commute around main venues on the Stadium Promenade. There will be lifts or ramps at all access points for easy wheelchair access. The sports and retail facilities will be readily accessible with the new Circle Line station located in the heart of the Sports Hub.
As for elite athletes' development, the Sports Institute, which will be housed in the Sports Hub, will complement other sports development facilities, such as the Singapore Sports School (SSS). The SSS primarily focuses on developing talented athletes up to the age of 18. Thereafter, the most talented athletes could progress on to the Sports Institute. Together, the SSS and Sports Institute will form an effective continuum for elite sport development and ensure that talented athletes have every aspect of their development needs comprehensively covered.
Thus, the Sports Hub plays a wider role than as a sports venue for major games. It acts as the catalyst for Singapore's overall sports strategy.
