WE REFER to the letter, 'Is 'trans fat free' label on pizza as per norms?' (ST, Feb 11) by Mr Chin Kee Thou.
The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) has, with the Health Promotion Board, established interim guidelines for the use of the 'trans fat free' claim on food products sold in Singapore. This claim may be used for food products which contain not more than 0.5g trans fatty acids per 100g. However, the exact quantities of trans fatty acids present in the products should be declared in the nutrition information panel, and not be rounded down to zero. Our interim guidelines are consistent with international standards.
We have investigated the prepacked pizzas sold under the FairPrice brand name and found that all products satisfy criteria for use of the 'trans fat free' claim.
