Global Arts City? Only on our own terms
I REFER to the letter, 'Complaints choir penalised undeservedly' by Ms Lau Ai Lin (ST, Feb 1).

There are two distinct issues that have to be dealt separately: satirisations of political and social issues, and restriction of foreign involvement in domestic affairs.

On the first, it is untrue that Singaporeans are 'uncomfortable with our national quirks' or that we lack 'the ability to be self-deprecating'. The proliferation of local plays and blogs dealing with the socio-political side of life bear testament to that.

On the second issue, the restriction of foreign involvement in domestic affairs is not unusual. Countries like the United States, France, India and Japan also have laws either prohibiting or regulating foreign participation in local politics.

Also, unlike Ms Lau, I do not think we need to be overly concerned over how foreigners view us, nor make concessions so we seem more acceptable in their eyes.

Singapore has made its way on its own terms over the past four decades. We seek to be a 'Global Arts City', but only on our own terms. Our laws and policies reflect the values of our society and we should have no compunction about upholding them.
