AS A person who had carried the palkuddam (pot of milk), I write to express my unhappiness on the confusion over the date for the event. Whatever the reasons for changing the Thaipusam festival date from Jan 23 to Jan 22, it had taken the public completely by surprise.
Even a temple official, who was contacted on Jan 18 for confirmation of the date, maintained that Thaipusam would fall on Jan 23. Confusion was the result.
The parties involved should bear in mind that changes like this would affect the physical, mental and psychological mindset of the devotees.
We understand the constraints and logistics involved in organising an event of this magnitude. We also understand the need for our cooperation in ensuring that the festival is celebrated with the dignity and decorum it deserves.
However, the spirit seemed to be clouded by the regimentation with which it was carried out. The joy and satisfaction of completing without mishap the 4km pilgrimage was snuffed out when, on arrival at Sri Thendayathapani Temple, the milk pot was grabbed from you, returned completely emptied and the devotee 'shooed' off to make way for the others, even before homage could be paid to the very deity for whom the milk was carried.
The volunteers roped in to collect the milk pots should be briefed to be a little less regimental and a little more humane.
