Corrective Works Order should be salutary
I WAS surprised to see a Corrective Works Order (CWO) session in full swing at the East Coast Park on Jan 19. I had thought the CWO was a thing of the past.

The CWO participants (for want of a better word) were made to sweep up fallen leaves in the park. I fail to see what fallen leaves have to do with litter.

The CWO participants have been punished with monetary fines for their littering offences. If they are to be punished further, shouldn't the choice of punishment

be one that befits the offence?

It is very easy to litter: just open your fingers that are holding a cigarette butt and gravity will do the rest. It takes very much more to stoop down and pick up the fallen cigarette butt.

Let the CWO participants experience what it takes to pick up litter. Litter is plentiful at the East Coast Park. In the process of picking up litter, they may come to realise how litter spoils the greenery and beaches.

Make the CWO sessions more educational. This may help to make it a thing of the past.
