I THANK Mr Basant Kapur for his letter, 'Extend more help to poor folk and families' (ST, Jan 17).
In assessing the needs of residents seeking help, factors such as sources of income, family support, and savings and expenditure patterns are important considerations. Such a holistic picture of their financial circumstances, as well as reasons behind seeking assistance and willingness to work towards self-reliance, is important so that community development councils
(CDCs) give help to those who really need it and can determine the most appropriate assistance.
We also believe that if a person is able, work is the best form of assistance to help the needy get back on their feet. Mr Ahmad Habib asked for a night job, and the CDC is helping him with that.
We also help those who have difficulty making ends meet, like Mr Lee, by teaching them how they can save money by not wasting water and electricity.
CDCs additionally refer clients to other community groups for help, in line with the 'Many Helping Hands' approach. Community organisations that offer help include grassroots organisations, voluntary welfare organisations, family service centres and corporate bodies. For instance, Mr Wasi Rashid and his nephew are being assisted by Muis; Mr Ahmad's grandchildren and the Lee children are being assisted with a myriad of help from community organisations and funds, from the CDAC, School Pocket Money Fund and kindergarten subsidies, to ensure they are able to continue their education.
Since the article was published, we have received several offers from individuals and organisations that are willing to join us to help those who are in need. This is indeed heartening. We invite Mr Kapur to call us on 6370 9901 to join us in our journey of assisting the needy.
