IN THE letter, 'Case should look into cooked-food price surge' (ST, Jan 15), the writer wrote that since the increase in GST from 5 to 7 per cent last year, prices of goods and services have skyrocketed.
The prices of cooked food in hawker centres, coffeeshops and food courts are largely determined by market forces. While the food vendors are able to adjust their prices freely, consumers have choices too. They can decide not to patronise those who raised prices indiscriminately.
The Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) will continue to conduct and publish price surveys so that consumers are better informed. We will keep up the pressure on businesses to be transparent in their price adjustments, and we will not hesitate to publicly name those who raise prices without justification. On their part, consumers can:
Contact the Committee against GST Profiteering on 6884-4478/6884-4327 if they suspect any business to be profiteering from the GST increase.
Call our hotline on 6463-1811 or visit our main office in Ghim Moh if they require assistance.
