RECENTLY I responded to a TV advertisement on phone ringtones. I was curious about one which featured a baby's laughter. I sent an SMS to a given number to make an enquiry. To my surprise I received an SMS reply thanking me for my 'subscription' and a phone number to contact if I needed information.
I called the number to say that I had wanted only to make enquiries. I received an SMS reply immediately telling me I had been charged $4 for the call. I called twice to stop the charge but the SMS replies again told me I was being charged $4 for each call. I called again and received a voice message saying that if I wished to unsubscribe, I was to press 1. I did that immediately and was finally 'unsubscribed'.
I ended up being charged a total of $12. I have learnt not to respond to any advertisement that does not provide the company's name or names of persons to contact.
