Chemical preservatives not allowed on seafood
I REFER to the letter, 'Any chemicals in 'fresh' seafood?' (ST, Jan 13), by Mr Richard Seah Siew Sai.

The use of chemical preservatives on fresh seafood is not allowed. The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) routinely samples fresh seafood for laboratory testing, and enforcement action will be taken against any trader found to be in possession of seafood adulterated with preservatives.

As for the 'kampung chickens' sold in local markets, they refer to crossbreeds of native chickens with commercial breeds of broiler chicken. These chickens are imported from AVA-accredited poultry farms which comply with our health requirements, and processed in local licensed poultry slaughterhouses.

AVA implements an on-going monitoring programme to test imported poultry for freedom from residues of antibiotics, hormones and other veterinary drugs.

We thank Mr Seah for his feedback.
