'Leap-frogging' buses due to heavy traffic: SMRT
I REFER to the letter by Mr Peter Wee Teik Hui (ST, Jan 1) in which he observed that there was 'leap-frogging' of bus service 980.

Our checks showed that on the night of Dec 21, there was heavy traffic congestion along the route taken by service 980 in the direction towards the city.

Hence, some buses arrived late at Lorong 1 Geylang Terminal, resulting in a 30-minute delayed departure for one of the buses on service 980.

This also resulted in overcrowding of the bus, and due to the higher passenger load, it travelled at a slower speed.

The next bus departed on time and was travelling and calling at bus stops as scheduled.

It eventually travelled ahead of the earlier bus, which the writer boarded, thereby creating the 'leap-frogging' impression.

Despite constraints due to road conditions, we would like to assure Mr Wee that we will continue to explore various ways to manage our bus service operations and improve service reliability to passengers.

We thank Mr Wee for sharing his observations with us.
