Victim care important to us, say police
POLICE would like to assure Mr Lionel De Souza ('Could molestation rap have been avoided?'; ST, Jan 1) and the public that victim care is important to us. We have in place procedures to manage the needs of vulnerable victims, especially those who are victims of serious sexual crimes such as rape.

For female victims of serious sexual crimes such as rape, police always endeavour to deploy female officers to interview or escort them. This is to put the victims more at ease after their traumatic experience. Following the recent case, we have made this practice mandatory.

It is not feasible to deploy female investigators to interview female complainants, witnesses and victims of all types of crime. Allegations of impropriety against police officers are rare. Cases are taken seriously and will be investigated.
