I REFER to Mr Shaun Mathew's inquiry on future expansion plans for Singapore's road network after the completion of current major road projects such as the Kallang- Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) and Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) (ST, Dec 24).
Our approach has always been to integrate transport planning with land use planning such as the development of new towns, financial and industrial areas to meet future travel demand.
KPE Phase II scheduled to open end 2008 will enhance travel along the north-east corridor. By 2013, we will have completed the 5km MCE which provides an essential link from Marina Bay area to the rest of the island.
We assure Mr Mathew the LTA constantly studies new road infrastructure to cater to travel demands of new employment and residential centres as well as improvements to major roads.

I REFER to the letter, 'Run express trains that bypass some stations' by Mr Shaun Mathew (ST, Dec 24). We would like to explain that the suggestion is not feasible. Our current track system was not designed to operate express trains as there is no parallel track to allow a train to bypass stations or overtake another train.
Also, trains arrive at a station every two to four minutes during peak hours. The express train idea means passengers would have to wait for selected trains rather than take any train that passes. This might create confusion and overcrowding.
