Girls' Home didn't do enough for girl's future
I REFER to the letter by Mr Jeya Pragasam Raj, 'Chance at O levels ruined by Girls' Home' (ST, Jan1), and sympathise with the writer and his granddaughter.

I understand the constraints the home might have in arranging for lessons for only one student for the Mother Tongue (Tamil) subject. But its decision not to help facilitate such lessons and exam requirements showed a lack of consideration for the girl's future.

There are 12 language centres that provide Tamil language lessons after school lessons. Why did the home not consider any of these centres?

Surely the home's personnel must have adequate knowledge of Singapore's education system to be able to guide the young people? Its decision has instead created an obstacle for the girl.

While on the subject, I would like to request the Education Ministry to increase the number of schools that offer Tamil language lessons.

Currently, there are 167 secondary schools here, and only 90 of these offer Tamil during school lessons. The other 77 schools do not, and students from these schools have to take their classes after school time at the 12 language centres, which may not be located near their schools or homes.
