Tower crane too close to cable cars for comfort
I WAS in a cable car to Sentosa with some friends from New Zealand on Jan 29, 1983. As we passed over the then Keppel Shipyard, I commented to my friends that the derrick of a drillship seemed to be rather high and close to the cable car.

We got back to the mainland earlier than planned and later that evening over dinner heard the news that the ship's derrick had become entangled with the steel ropeway of the cable- car system, sending two cars plunging into the sea below. Seven passengers died.

Last weekend, I took my family to dinner at The Jewel Box on Mount Faber and was given complimentary tickets to the cable-car ride. After dinner we took a ride across to Sentosa.

As the cabin moved closer to the HarbourFront buildings and over a construction site, I was struck by a sense of deja vu when a construction tower crane loomed close to the cable cars. From my cabin I saw that the tower was almost the same height as the cable car.

We returned to the station on Mount Faber safely but I could not help shuddering at the thought that here we may have the makings of another disaster.

What if the crane hits a cable car? What if the crane topples over onto the ropeway? What if the lifting cable of the crane snaps and becomes entangled with the ropeway?

I hope that the authorities have done a proper evaluation of the situation and removed all the risk factors.
