I REFER to the letter, 'No need to junk family values to get creative' (ST, Nov 28).
While I agree with Mr Gerald Giam that there is no need to discard traditional family values in order to foster creativity, I believe the key is tolerance and inclusiveness.
Conservative Singaporeans are perfectly free to oppose 'sexual liberalism' or other values that go against their 'traditional' ones, but we should also respect the right of others to subscribe to ideals different from ours.
Exchange of information and ideas is crucial for the progress of any society. Mr Giam's suggestion that 'removing the weeds in the garden could help the truly beautiful flowers grow and bloom' might be good but perhaps it is better to 'let a hundred flowers bloom', and let the course of events decide whether they are fragrant flowers or deadly weeds.
