CONSIDER Abraham Lincoln, Moses and Than Shwe. It is not difficult to spot the odd one. Than Shwe, of course. He is the only person on the list who enslaves his own people. As for the other two, they freed their people from slavery.
I am writing to express a grave concern among Singapore citizens on the situation in Myanmar. Not only is there widespread brutality committed by the security forces on innocent civilians, but the number of people living in poverty and malnourished children is also staggering. We should therefore all stand united in support of our Government's position to join the Myanmar community in urging the junta to stop the violence against the protesters.
We should also retain close relations with Myanmar nationals in Singapore. The Myanmar community here is law-abiding.
However, I urge the Myanmar community to beware those who profess to look after their welfare. In fact, they have their personal agenda.
Until peace and democracy return to Myanmar, we should stay calm while remembering the slain Myanmar monks and citizens who laid down their lives for their countrymen.
