IN VIEW of the Government's effort to encourage Singaporeans to master their mother tongue well, I would like to propose an idea to the Ministry of Education (MOE).
Currently, junior college (JC) admission criteria are based on L1R5 - English Language (if candidates do not offer Higher Mother Tongue) and five other relevant subjects.
Mother Tongue languages, which include Chinese, Malay and Tamil, may or may not be taken into consideration when computing the L1R5 aggregate.
In order to make Singaporeans learn their mother tongue well, I propose that MOE make the grade for Mother Tongue compulsory in computing the L1R5 aggregate score.
If this measure is taken, students who want to enrol in JC will have no choice but to learn Mother Tongue well.
This measure will give these students an advantage as they will be competent in two languages (English and Mother Tongue), since more families nowadays are concerned only with English language, neglecting their mother tongue.
