THE article, 'Stunning backdrop - water curtains' (ST, Aug 2), provided an insight into the spectacular effects and breathtaking moments that await us at the National Day Parade (NDP), come Aug 9. At the same time, the impressive figures displayed in the table, 'NDP by the numbers', gave a glimpse into the resource-intensive nature of such a mega-celebration. From these figures, of particular concern would be the huge amount of recyclables that can be generated from materials such as packaging and plastic bottles.
Have receptacles been allocated for the collection of such recyclable items at the NDP, and, if so, are the participants and audience aware of such a provision? If not, I implore the organisers to take this into consideration, using this as a platform to further reinforce our stance on the importance of reducing waste.
