American moved by National Day songs
OVER the past eight to nine years, I have become quite familiar with Singapore. I met my Singaporean wife there about nine years ago.

We now live in the United States but return regularly, including on Chinese New Year, a journey I look forward to even though it takes more than 24 hours.

Over the years, my fondness for Singapore has grown. I thoroughly enjoy visiting my wife's family and Singapore every year.

Early on, we returned once a year. Then it became twice, and now we visit three times a year.

This August, we are returning for my nephew-in-law's wedding. My wife and I hoped to attend the National Day Parade at Marina Bay but it does not look like we can get tickets.

Next year, we will make a special trip back to attend Singapore's first Formula One Grand Prix.

When I accessed the Straits Times Interactive National Day Special webpage recently, the song There's No Place I'd Rather Be started to play.

As I listened and watched the video, I recognised the people as Singaporeans, and the scenes as Singaporean. The words of the song struck an emotional chord with me. It was the same with the second song, Will You?

Though I was born and raised in the US, I was moved by the patriotic songs. You have a wonderful country, and much to be proud of.

As the American husband of a proud Singaporean wife, I admire Singapore and its accomplishments.
