MOE committed to five-day work week
I REFER to Mr Nah Yong Hwee's letter, 'Five-day work week? Not for his teacher wife' (ST, June 23).

Since its implementation in 2004, schools have been working out practical and creative ways to help teachers and staff enjoy the five-day work week, while providing a well-rounded and holistic education to students.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has given schools the flexibility to organise activities on Saturdays when it is impractical to do so on weekdays. Nonetheless, schools have been mindful of minimising the requirement for staff to be on duty on Saturdays. As Mr Nah pointed out, schools generally do not go beyond using four Saturdays in a year for school events.

We appreciate that teachers have been professional in their response to duties on Saturdays as they understand that some Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) need to be carried out on Saturdays.

Teachers continue to have the flexibility to decide how best to balance their CCAs and lesson-preparation responsibilities. We will continue to encourage schools to share innovative practices in helping teachers manage their time.

We suggest that Mr Nah's wife discuss with her principal viable solutions. He can also get in touch with us on 6872-2220 should he have further queries.
