I REFER to the letter, 'Whatever happened to 'quality programming'?' (ST, June 16), by Mr Tan Wee Liang.
We thank Mr Tan for his feedback. Producing quality programmes rests on a pact between the content producer and its audience, and while the professionals can produce what they consider to be good, it will still be influenced and judged by the viewers and viewership ratings.
Content producers are constantly challenged to provide a good mix of quality programmes that are relevant and engaging, especially with today's healthy choice of viewing options.
We regret that Mr Tan is unhappy with the re-run of Maggi And Me. Please be assured that we have always been prudent with scheduling re-runs, especially during prime time. The Maggi And Me re-run has attracted very healthy ratings. However, we note Mr Tan's point and will be mindful of this in future.
Reality talent shows are a product of its time and the popularity of this genre is an unstoppable global phenomenon. All of MediaCorp's channels have recognised this and have adapted to this trend by producing local reality talent shows that reflect our culture and promote our own talents. Their continued high ratings attest to their popularity.
Feedback from viewers is important to us and, to that end, we will be setting up a resource panel for Channel 5's local programmes. We invite Mr Tan and other viewers who may be interested to be part of this panel to write in to local5@mediacorptv.com.
We hope that Mr Tan will enjoy the programmes that Channel 5 has lined up in the coming months which include Live The Dream, Stories Of Love, Lost, Brothers And Sisters, Grey's Anatomy and Harry Potter, to name just a few.
Kenneth Liang Executive Vice-President TV Programming and Production, Channel 5 MediaCorp TV
