WHY IS it these days that whenever I step into a retail boutique, I am greeted by the sales assistants in Mandarin instead of English?

As the writer correctly pointed out, Singapore cannot be entirely self-sufficient in food supply due to our limited land resources. Currently, local production accounts for 7 per cent of our leafy vegetable consumption, 15 per cent of our fish consumption and 30 per cent of our egg consumption.
How does such flimsy covering prevent cargo from falling off a vehicle?

ONLINE LETTERS
I AM a Singaporean based overseas and I travel back to Singapore regularly for business meetings. On the morning of April 25 at 9.45am, I took a Comfort taxi from Royal Plaza Hotel on Scotts to Changi Airport for a departing flight.
I REFER to the article, 'Not for export - end of the road for Gurkhas? (April 25). The Singapore Police Force also has a small Gurkha contingent formed in 1949.
I AGREE with the Singapore Motor Workshop Association (SMWA) that repair costs cannot be inflated by motor workshops, 'Not fair to blame all car workshops for high claims' (April 28).

I FULLY support the statement by the president of the Law Society, Mr Michael Hwang, that lawyers cannot be blamed for motor accident claims, 'Blaming lawyers is unfair: Law Society' (April 30).
I REFER to recent reports of taxi drivers refusing $50 notes. Surely this is not surprising.
