LOOKING at the extensive facts disclosed, one cannot but conclude that the human element was significant indeed. The several officers whose duty was to watch over Mas Selamat either made errors of judgment or lowered their guard. Government leaders did not mince their words in their comments. Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew called it 'a very severe lesson in complacency'. Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng said it was a costly and painful wake-up call. Many will concur.
I REFER to Tuesday's report, 'Gone in 11 minutes'. Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng described the mistakes that led to Mas Selamat Kastari's escape as 'silly and incredible' and rightly so. How else can one explain:
THE Committee of Inquiry failed to mentioned a key lapse that made Jemaah Islamiah fugitive Mas Selamat Kastari's escape possible: the lack of a clear classification and labeling system. Were the guards even aware that Mas Selamat is an extremely dangerously man?

AWARE readily and happily agrees with Dr John Hui Keem Peng's letter on Monday, 'It's not 'safe sex' with the use of condoms', that young people should be given correct information 'so they can make the right decision for themselves'. We share Dr Hui's concerns about 'safe sex', which is a basis of Aware's holistic approach to sex education.
I WOULD like to clarify certain points made by Miss Susanna Lim in her letter last Thursday, 'Wild dogs terrorise Jurong'. While the letter drums up the drama, the reality is that stray dogs rarely attack or even approach humans unless provoked or they perceive a threat.
ON SATURDAY, it was reported that there were 4.779 million train and rides a day in the first quarter, up 7 per cent over last year ('Buses, MRT see jump in ridership'). While the growth in public transport ridership is significant, it is not known if the rise has been at any real expense to car trips.
IN A collective property sale, minority objectors create uncertainty, resulting in hardship for the 80 per cent majority owners, as follows:

I REFER to Monday's report, 'Unhappy with service? For most, it's 'talk only, no action' '. Having worked in the service sector for many years, I have observed that customers complain not because they have a grudge against anyone but they want complete satisfaction for the purchase.
I REFER to the current outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease. I may have stumbled onto one of the contributory factors. Last week, at around noon, I was at the washroom at Turf City and I found the toilet was full of kindergarten children.
I REFER to Dr Ong Siew Cheng's letter, 'Tibet's current violence smells of a Western agenda' (April 11). I agree that China has done much to modernise Tibet. But so did Britain and Portugal for Hong Kong and Macau, respectively.

MY SINGTEL bills for the past two months showed outstanding amounts which I was not responsible for. I called the SingTel call centre and was assured by the officers there that I was not liable for the charges.
I RECENTLY made an arrangement with Ikea to deliver and assemble some bookshelves at my flat. As the workers arrived before our appointment time and I was not at home, they started the assembly outside my gate. I was quite impressed with their efficiency.
ON FEB 29, I went to ABN Thomson branch to close my old account and open a new joint savings account. Because it was a new account, I needed to get ATM cards and was told it would take three working days.
