PRINT EDITION LETTERS
I REFER to Tuesday's report, 'JI escape: One blot should not mar good work, says Jaya'. Those were words of wisdom from Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security S. Jayakumar to us younger management executives to pick up staff motivational skills so corporate machinery can continue to run even when there is a technical hitch.
I REFER to Saturday's Home cover story, 'Heritage centre seeks full government funding to stay afloat'. I would like to point out that full funding is not what the Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) is seeking.
I READ with interest Mr Dudley Au's letter ('Another view of the expat-local Indian gap', April 4). He has drawn attention to the prevalence of the caste system as a reason for the divide between local Indians and expat Indians. I am not sure how valid this reason is but at least in the case of local Indians, caste is not a major factor in inter-personal relationships.
TWO recent articles, 'Teen sex infections likely to hit new high', April 6, and 'Rise in STIs among teenagers', April 10, reiterate the need to reach out to this at-risk section of the population with comprehensive sexuality education programmes that address the needs of increasingly younger sexually active teenagers in a rapidly changing socio-cultural context.
WITH reference to Saturday's article, 'Commodity prices raised by low stockpiles, says Jim Rogers', the Government should set up a full-service commodity centre and exchange to rival the Chicago Board of Trade in the United States.
IT IS heartening that every so often, we read about increasing efforts to recycle.
RESIDENTS in Jurong West have made desperate calls to the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) to remove a pack of wild stray dogs that has terrorised the area, going on the rampage attacking and mauling community cats and residents' pets, and putting people at risk of vicious attacks.
'As the Government has links with many countries in commercial and industrial development, we should consider partnerships with other countries in animal and vegetable farming to ensure a cheap, long-term food supply for Singapore.'
'Each rotation of the Singapore Flyer takes up to 30 minutes. What happens if someone requires emergency medical help while he is stuck at the top?'
ONLINE LETTERS
IT'S not news that as a part of the world is fighting the problem of obesity, another part is dying of hunger. But does it take a crisis to make us realise we are taking in more than we need?
I HAVE nothing against foreign workers who come here looking for greener pastures. But should there not be a requirement that they should at least be able to communicate in basic English?
THE recent well-organised Western protests and demonstrations and the use of violence to disrupt the Olympic torch relay are sad, not only because they reveal the anti-China and anti-Chinese sentiments of these so-called pro-Tibetan supporters but also the hypocrisy and double standards of Western countries.
IN HIS letter, 'Tibet's current violence smells of a Western agenda' (April 11), Dr Ong Siew Chey conveniently left out the fact that when China invaded Tibet in 1950, Tibet was self-governing and had a working government and political system.
I HAVE been reading with interest the letters on the Tibet issue. One reader talks about the Western agenda, another talks about how China has effected a great deal of development in Tibet, still others feel that the Olympics must not be marred by what is China's internal matter.
MY DAUGHTER and I signed for a new package at end-March with True Yoga and Fitness Centre after a lot of hard-sell even though our existing package with them has not expired.
