PRINT EDITION LETTERS
I READ last Saturday's article, 'Singapore sporting a new brand' and propose that we implement a cap of 20 per cent on foreign talent representation in every national team. While foreign talent serves as a guide and a spur to local-born athletes, the latter should still form the core of a national team. The women's swim team, with Tao Li at the helm, is a prime example of how the foreign talent scheme should work.
WE REFER to Tuesday's letter, 'F1 light-up makes mockery of Earth Hour' and thank Mr Kelvin Tan Kheng Liang for his views.
IT'S IMPORTANT to clear up a few facts about the Johnnie Walker F1 event at the Padang last weekend in my reply to Mr Erik Peyrer's letter on Thursday, 'That Sunday F1 vroom was dangerous'.
MANY Singaporeans have been complaining about how foreigners are taking away their jobs in Singapore. However, when I placed a job advertisement in The Straits Times recently, I was flooded with applicants on the very day the ad appeared. Of the more than 50 applicants, three were Malaysians, one was Singaporean and the rest were from the Philippines, Myanmar and China.
I REFER to the letter 'Tune out TVMobile, please' by Mr Tan Shao Yi on Saturday. TVMobile is mindful of the audio level on buses.
I REFER to Mr N. Nageswaran's letter last Saturday, 'Multiculturalism: Marriage need not be the acid test'. There is a fundamental difference between tolerance and acceptance.
I REFER to the Singapore Association of Plastic Surgeons and the Singapore Society of Cosmetic (Aesthetic) Surgeons' letter on Wednesday, 'It's about protecting patients, not turf: Plastic surgeons'.
IN 'MAKE medical directive less intrusive for witnesses' last Monday, Mr Victor Gomez shared his experience in making an Advance Medical Directive (AMD) at a polyclinic and called for the process to be reviewed.
I REFER to Mr Shaheedu Pakri's letter, 'Act on foreign sex workers' (March 18). Singapore welcomes all visitors as long as they meet our prevailing immigration requirements, which include holding a passport valid for at least six months, entry visa (if applicable), confirmed return/onward ticket, sufficient funds for the period of stay in Singapore and entry facilities.
ONLINE LETTERS
CURTIN University has to justify its tuition fees. For one thing, nothing beats having to be in Australia soaking up the Aussie education experience. Thus, tuition fees in Australia and Singapore have to be different and not comparable.
I REFER to Ms Chua Shuyi's letter on Tuesday, 'Article gave macaques a human face". Whales, elephants, the American bison and a host of others are either on the threshold of extinction or have passed into extinction.
I REFER to Mr Cheong Tuck Kuan's letter, on Monday, 'Private clubs should have code of conduct'. I strongly support his call for clarification, including stricter governance and audit standards at private/members clubs.
WHAT makes a school principal tick? Is it her talk or her walk? Taking her talk for a vigorous walk is of little use if teachers and pupils neither understand that talk, or actively support it.
I HAVE a debit card with OCBC. They issued a new debit card and I was not told that I should discontinue using the existing card.
