PRINT EDITION LETTERS
FORMER Formula One world car racing champion Mika Hakkinen may have thrilled a Sunday crowd of over 10,000 as he zipped down St Andrew's Road at a top speed of almost 200kmh.
I REFER to last Friday's Review article 'Jailbreaks don't matter much if...', which provided a contrarian perspective on the Mas Selamat Kastari saga, especially the following four points raised or alluded to by the writer, Mr Michael Richardson.
I READ with concern last Sunday about the fee hike for Nets CashCards, 'CashCard price up'. Consumers have no choice but to buy at the price set by Nets, which is privately listed and whose major shareholders are banks. Motorists, whose concerns were addressed by an official in the Nets website, are not the only ones affected. University students like me use CashCards regularly.
I REFER TO Monday's front-page lead, 'LTA to consider returning cash for scrapped cars'. Would it be possible for the Government to consider encouraging taxi operators to introduce alternative vehicle models to the fuel-guzzling and inefficient ones that are being used as taxis now?
THE latest Government proposal reported on Monday, 'LTA to consider returning cash for scrapped cars', which is to offer a cash incentive to get people to switch to public transport - does not address the root cause of Singapore's traffic problem.
MY NIECE is in primary school and she has physical education (PE) every Wednesday. However, she says she doesn't like sports activities like running 1.6km or running races. Instead, she says she likes badminton and other sports-related games. Her teachers rarely let the pupils play games because of the focus on passing Nafa fitness tests.
WE REFER to Mr William Jefferson's letter 'Build hotels outside city to solve squeeze' (March 26), in which he suggested that hotels be built outside the central area to cater to the increasing flow of visitors. The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) recognise the need to increase the number of hotel rooms and provide a greater variety of hotels to cater to different tourist preferences.
MY AREA in Punggol needs a heavy vehicle carpark badly. There is one in Sengkang to which I applied for a lot. But I am not optimistic about getting one any time soon. I am told there are 55 drivers on the waiting list.
ON SATURDAY at 9.45am, I was at a carpark close to Block 265, Serangoon Avenue 3. This carpark is fed by a one-way road.
ONLINE LETTERS
I REFER to letter, '10% service charge - for what?', by Mr Lawrence Teo Wei Hsin (March 26). It is indisputable that Singapore is an efficient country. We are efficient in all aspects imaginable: in the production of impressive economic growth, in the provision of a safety net for needy citizens, in looking ahead and preparing our young for the ever-competitive globalised world. Efficiency is the way to go, even in the service industry.
SERVICE standards will deteriorate further if we continue to hire foreign workers who are not trained or service-oriented. My Nokia E65 developed problems five months after I bought it. I sent it back to the service centre at Wheelock Place for repairs. Two weeks later, I was told it was ready for collection.
I REFER to the letter, 'Do something about speeding monsters' by Mr Victor Adrian Lim (March 26). I have been driving vehicles of different categories for quite some time now, and I have come across a lot of different situations and, sometimes, dangerous ones as well.
THE unit handling TV sports coverage must be indifferent to sports. Often, a short TV sports news report would be mercilessly truncated, resulting in viewers wondering whether Tiger Woods' long putt was going to end up in the cup or, like in the recent Singapore-Lebanon soccer match, whether our team was successful in their third shot at goal, because the recording was abruptly cut off and the screen returned to the newscaster.
MONEY, or the lack of it, seems to be the main ailment facing the Football Association of Singapore. The outgoing FAS general secretary, Mr Steven Yeo, lamented that this is a stumbling block to the progress of soccer in Singapore.
I REFER to the online letter, 'Put on hold for 30 mins each of 5 times she called' by Mrs Lim-Sin Chey Cheng (March 20). We apologise for Mrs Lim's unpleasant experience and the inconvenience it had caused. We assure her that we are in the process of improving our call centre operations to better serve our customers. This includes adding resources to address the high call volume to our call centre at peak times of the day.
