PRINT EDITION LETTERS
AS A Singaporean, I was disheartened by Mr Arthur Lim Teck Meng's contribution last Saturday, 'Tell public when life will return to normal', in which he proposed that the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration and Checkpoints Authority 'release a joint statement to inform all Singaporeans when normal checking procedures will be resumed at both checkpoints'.
HEAVY traffic congestion around Woodlands Centre Road is almost a daily occurrence. Some time ago, heavy motorcycle traffic prompted the authorities to re-direct motorcycles to access Woodlands checkpoint via the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) only. The move was lauded by residents and businesses in the area.
I AM heartened that medical doctors will treat aesthetic problems instead of beauty salons and slimming centres which make unbelievable claims. Would the authorities prefer that consumers go to questionable sources of aesthetic treatment?

'Botched work of any kind by the doctor means the patient will not return, so why only for aesthetic medicine?'
IN RESPONSE to the article, 'Do you know how much of your food is genetically modified?' (March 14), we would like to clarify the issues of safety and labelling of genetically modified (GM) food.
PLEASE refer to last Tuesday's letter by Mr Andrew Seow, 'Latest crane mishaps: Two accidents too many'.
THE Government has taken swift action to halt accidents involving tower cranes. Employers can also contribute their effort, by not only playing a larger part in the strict enforcement of safety rules but also taking punitive action against those who do not practise safety. It can do this by making regular unannounced inspection visits to worksites.
I REFER to Saturday's article, 'Fans must bite the bullet of costs' and other reports on SingTel's successful capture of official rights to screen Uefa soccer matches. Like many football fans in Singapore, I am disappointed. We have had to stomach numerous price increases over the past few years just to follow our favourite sport. Are the interests of the consumer considered? Is it fair to make us pay more and more?

ONLINE LETTERS
I REFER to Saturday's online letter by Ms Tan E-Lyn, 'No economy seats on non-stop flights to the US? S'pore losing out'. The decision to offer an all-Business Class service on our non-stop flights to Los Angeles and New York was made after much consideration. The decision recognises that demand for the services is heaviest among Business Class customers and, on many days, the waiting list for seats is very heavy.
I AM saddened by Mr Lau Chee Kian's dismissal of our community at Gillman Heights in his letter on Thursday, 'Sense of kampung in condos overstated'.
I REFER to Mr Lau Chee Kian's letter on Thursday, 'Sense of kampong in condos overstated'. It is indeed true that the 'true kampong spirit' exists only among a very insignificant percentage of our population. The Government has in fact tried to keep this friendliness alive, and we see some results.

THE recent Malaysian general election has seen a monumental change in the country's political landscape, bringing opposition representation to an unprecedented level with as many as five states now under its belt. For the first time in Malaysia's history, the state of Penang, which had always been regarded as a stronghold of the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional, has fallen to the opposition Democratic Action Party. Its new Chief Minister, Mr Lim Guan Eng, raised the ante by declaring that Malaysia's decades-old affirmative action programme for the native Malays, the New Economic Policy, will be abolished in the state.
I REFER to Saturday's online letter by Mr Ace Kindred Cheong Shiang How, 'Why behaviour of cyclist who locked library door should not be tolerated'. First, the width of the passageway where I parked my bicycle is about four times the width of the narrow entrance and that it was in an area of the National Library Board (NLB) premises which was quite deserted. I was, therefore, not parking my bicycle 'indiscriminately' and in no way could I have posed safety issues to the public.
WE REFER to last Thursday's online letter by Mr Kevin See regarding the level of service rendered to him at iHub, 'StarHub's F.B.I. (friendly but inadequate) service'. We have contacted Mr See to apologise for the inconvenience and unhappiness caused by the lapse in service provided by our shop staff.
I BOUGHT my Nokia N73 on June 28 last year. On Aug 17, I sent my phone for repair because of problems, and collected it on Aug 23, but only after I had to call the service centre to check on the status. However, the condition of the phone was no better.
