PRINT EDITION LETTERS
THE escape of terrorist Mas Selamat Kastari shows an urgent need for more vigilance all the time. Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, as expected, hit the nail on the head by calling it frankly a case of complacency and lack of vigilance in last Saturday's front-page report, 'MM blames complacency for JI leader's escape'.
I APPLAUD Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew for the first honest assessment of Mas Selamat Kastari's escape and its possible consequences last Friday.
I READ with shock that Malaysia's ruling coalition Barisan Nasional (BN) lost four states as well as its two-thirds majority in Parliament and can rule only with a simple majority.
I REFER to the article, 'New balloon device keeps arteries clear without stent implant', last Friday.
IN HIS letter, 'Means testing: Spell out rules for special cases', last Thursday, Mr Jason Chiam Chiah Sern asked for guidelines to be spelt out specifically for special cases.
I REFER to the letter, 'Super Chingay but help ushers do their job well' (Feb 22), by Mr Han Li.
I APPLAUD the Ministry of Education's (MOE) effort to raise the bar for higher-quality preschool education and have an accreditation system in place by 2011.
I REFER to the letter, 'Underground stain on a cultural icon' (Feb 22).
ONLINE LETTERS
I WAS a member of City Harvest Church and left the church in December 2006. By the time I left, I had donated $5,500 to the church for its building fund project. After I left, I suffered financial difficulties. I was in between jobs and there were hefty, unforeseen medical bills. I was told by my friends and church members that I could seek a refund for my donation because there were similar precedents.
IT IS heartening to note that much more attention is now given to mental health by the Ministry of Health. Physicians are aware that for physical health, preventive medicine is better than the actual treatment of diseases. The same holds true for mental health.
I REFER to Thursday's letter, 'Wooing en bloc residents: One bank does it right' by Ms Lucy Chong Oi Peng. My family, too, has suffered harassment from all types of agents purporting to help us with our 'problem' of managing our finances.
I URGE universities to look into the size of lecture groups. Engineering lecture groups can be as large as more than 400. Though lecture venues may be able to accommodate the large amount of students, it may not be an effective way of conveying the message.
MY ELDER daughter is studying in St Clare Kindergarten, Bukit Batok. She is in K1. On Feb 15, we received a letter from the supervisor of the kindergarten stating that it will close down at the end of the year. We are grateful that the management is giving early notice to parents.
