IT IS common for teachers of a school to feel gratified when a pupil becomes a well-known figure. But sometimes, it doesn't work that way.
IN THE light of the security threat escaped detainee Mas Selamat Kastari poses to our country, we should offer a reward for his capture. If police do not wish to set a precedent, Members of Parliament could pool and donate a sum of money which can then be given to those who offer information resulting in his capture. This may also be attractive and effective as an incentive to residents in neighouring countries, especially as no one has caught him yet.
AS A new volunteer working with pupils who are not doing well in school, I detected a serious learning problem in a Primary 5 child.

THESE are exciting times for sports in Singapore, as we prepare to welcome the world in two years to the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG). But I was left with mixed feelings after reading two reports, 'Sailors tipped for three 2010 golds' (Feb 23) and 'Secondary-League' (Feb 17).
It is sad to note the absence of sporting activities today in the National University of Singapore. Why is it we never read of participation by any NUS football, rugby, cricket, hockey and athletic teams in Singapore?
I APPLAUD the move by the world governing body in table tennis in the report on Saturday, 'ITTF places restrictions on foreign-born players'' which will cap the number of foreign players a country can import.
I THANK Mr Yap Swee Hoo for his suggestion last Wednesday, 'Bar those with mental records from driving'. An individual applying for the provisional driving licence is required to declare he does not suffer from any disability or medical condition that would impair his driving and make him a source of public danger. Such disabilities or medical conditions include epilepsy, mental disorder, sudden attacks of giddiness, and visual defects like total colour blindness. An applicant who declares he is suffering from such conditions, or is assessed by our officers as such, will be rejected.
UNDER the CPF Investment Scheme (CPFIS), members who wish to invest their CPF funds must open a CPF Investment Account with one of the three CPFIS agent banks. When members want to transfer their CPF funds to fixed deposits to earn more interest, the funds move from the CPF Ordinary Account to the CPF Investment Account with the CPFIS agent bank and then to the fixed-deposit account.
I REFER to the letter, 'No point to hawker centre fans' (Feb 25). We agree with Mr Tan Poh Soon that good ventilation and control of thermal conditions are important for a pleasant dining experience in hawker centres. It has therefore been an important focus in the National Environment Agency (NEA) Hawker Centres Upgrading Programme.

THE report, 'Hanyu pinyin a crutch for pupils? Views are mixed', on Wednesday seems to convey the impression that some parents are concerned that their kids in Primary 1 are taught hanyu pinyin without the Chinese words or characters.
A GROUP of us had booked to play golf at Marina Bay Golf Course at 10.04am on Saturday. We were disappointed when we reached the golf course as it was raining heavily.
ON THURSDAY at around 7.45pm, while on our way for dinner, my dad's car broke down in Pasir Ris Street 53. We then decided to call Borneo Motor's towing service for help.

WE WERE at United Square on Sunday when we chanced upon a 'meet and greet the characters' session for the upcoming Disney On Ice show.
NOW that we have won the bid to host the first Youth Olympic Games (YOG), the hard work in preparation for it begins, especially the staging of the opening ceremony on Aug 14, 2010. As this YOG opening ceremony will be televised worldwide, unlike our National Day parade ceremony which is broadcast only on our national TV station, it has to be spectacular and of an extremely high standard.
IT IS frustrating that the escalator - which is meant to ease the flow of human traffic - has become a blocked path of stagnant commuters refusing to budge on either side. This happens during peak hours and even during off-peak hours.
EMERGENCY vehicles use sirens to warn motorists to either give way or keep clear.
WE WOULD like to thank Ms Freda Chiang Yin for her feedback on Thursday regarding her husband's Personal Line of Credit application, 'Four days, six separate mailers for one credit line'.
