RECENTLY, I befriended a group of scholars from China studying at my alma mater, Nanyang Technological University (NTU). They were in their late teens and were attending foundation courses in English and maths before starting their undergraduate studies. In their five-year sojourn at NTU, they will be given free lodging and a monthly allowance of $500 each. Needless to say, they do not have to pay for their tuition fees. When they graduate, they must work in Singapore for six years as part of their 'payback'' bond.
WHY can't students of private education centres offering university degrees buy MRT or bus concession passes, like their peers in public tertiary institutions?
WHEN our Member of Parliament visited my neighbourhood recently, my wife and I asked her to lobby for a covered walkway from our Housing Board block to the MRT station, which is within walking distance.

I REFER to the article, 'GPs quizzed on shoddy cosmetic treatments' (Feb 18). Regular patients suffer too.
I'M WRITING in response to the comment by Ms Ngo Min Ying of Standard Chartered Bank (Feb 11).
WHO has the right of way on the pedestrian pathway: the cyclist or the pedestrian? Recently, I was almost knocked down by a cyclist who whizzed past me as if I didn't exist. The trouble with cyclists is that they expect pedestrians to give way.
WE AGREE with Ms Chua Mui Hoong on the need to 'Regulate private health insurers to minimise cherry-picking' (Feb 15).
MR TAN Poh Cheng asked about the use of Edusave funds by schools in his letter, 'How does MOE ensure Edusave is used wisely?' (Feb 6).
WE THANK Ms Eng Ting Ting for her letter, 'Retain metal signboards while going electronic' (Feb 11). Ms Eng is right. The signboards are new.

I catch the SBS Transit Bus 74 at a bus stop near SIM and Ngee Ann Polytechnic on Clementi Road. And as you can imagine, boarding is a challenge. If you are unlucky, the bus doesn't stop as the bottom deck is full of students - even though there are empty seats on the upper deck.
I travel at least once a month on Singapore International Airlines (SIA). Recently I had an unpleasant experience when trying to reschedule a flight from Shanghai to Singapore on 23 Feb and a return flight on 25 Feb.
Last weekend I went to a GV cinema and bought a bottle of mineral water at the snack counter. Later I realised that the label on it read 'Complimentary from CapitaLand'. The next day I went to another GV cinema and saw bottles with the same labels among the drinks for sale.

My lunch booking for 11 at Lei Gardens Chijmes ended badly when we arrived to find the restaurant overbooked, but the staff would not admit it. Each time we asked for our table we were told the staff were getting it ready. It was only after 45 minutes and after I made a terrible scene that we were seated at a hastily-erected table in a cramped corner on the second floor.
If Steven Spielberg has resigned his post as artistic director of the Beijing Olympics because the Chinese are not doing enough to stop the bloodshed in Darfur, should he not, logically, renounce his citizenship of the country that has created so much bloodshed in Iraq?
